Iowa Senate Draft

Josh Turek (D) vs Rep. Ashley Hinson (R), open seat (Ernst retiring) · messaging analysis as of 2026-10-27

Turek has the money and the early vote, but the last three pollsters show Hinson ahead; her rhetorical breaks with Trump are blunting the contrast on her votes.

An open Republican seat that the model rates a coin flip. It is one of the races most likely to decide Senate control.

Where it stands

Why the message isn't landing

  1. Hinson is running away from her own votes. She calls for the Iran war to end and criticises the beef-tariff suspension, while her site leads with "Standing with President Trump." Without a hard vote contrast, her rhetoric wins the frame.
  2. Older voters aren't moving. Hinson leads clearly among voters over 50 (Emerson +13; Trafalgar 65+ by about 10). Turek's health-cost message is not reaching them at the volume needed.
  3. Turek opened a base fight late. The "Stop the Nonsense" ad (Oct 25) drew criticism from One Iowa Action and from Republicans, pulling attention from costs and Iran in the final week.

What's working

Top 5 recommendations

  1. Iran: her record, worded exactly. Use the one verified roll call. Do not use "seven times."

"Ashley Hinson says the Iran war should end. On March 5, she voted against H.Con.Res. 38, the war-powers resolution directing the President to remove U.S. forces from unauthorized hostilities in Iran."

House roll 85, 2026-03-05, failed 212–219; Hinson Nay.

  2. Votes over rhetoric: H.R. 1, twice.

"Ashley Hinson's own website says 'Standing with President Trump.' She voted for his big bill, twice: May 22 and July 3, 2025."

House rolls 145 (Yea) and 190 (Aye). Any health-cost claim about the bill needs a cited CBO figure before air.

  3. Answer attendance with context. The 58% missed votes in the 2026 session is real; do not deny it. Pair the 81% participation since 2023 with Hinson's per diem, and explain 2026 absences only with a documented reason.

  4. Over-50 voters: health costs and Medicare on local broadcast. This is the group where Hinson's lead sits.

  5. Early-vote chase with Sand. Democrats are up 29% vs 2022; push under-50 and low-propensity voters. Do not extend the "Stop the Nonsense" fight; return to costs and Iran.
